How To: Kill your brand

Ginger + Liz send cease and desist notification: how to kill your brand

Lately there's been some rumbling in Beauty Bloggin paradise. More and more often companies do not agree with the content that has been posted on blogs and they start to prance around like a horse in heat. We've already seen a company that could not handle negative reviews (LimeCrime) and we've also experienced a brand that couldn't enjoy the free publicity that was being generated by an too early released press release.

This is not where the rumbling stops. Word on the street was that Diamond Cosmetics delivers to private labels. Diamond Cosmetics openly states they do this, I see no problems there.

But, let's say, you're a blogger. You don't want to palm off on your readers by recommending them an expensive version of a cheaper product. And this is where things can go wrong. Recently I politely declined the request of Elle.com to place an advertisement that included Priti Polish (another would-be private label of DC). It just wouldn't feel right. If I had any products of which I'd suspect that another brand's selling them for less money, I wouldn't hesitate to ask myself what's the deal.

This is exactly what Sara from Daily Polish did. Sara reviewed some products (she bought herself) by Ginger + Liz and she and her readers noticed these were similar to the ones by Diamond Cosmetics. When her readers requested some comparisons of the two brands, she went ahead and provided these.

A few posts later and Sara is being threatened with a $200.000 lawsuit. This kind notice was left through the attorney of Ginger + Liz. All posts and comments concerning this matter must be taken offline if she wants to stay out of trouble. Funnily enough Sara isn't the only one who ever questioned this en publique.

Of course it's common sense and decency to not totally destroy a company without grounded facts. There's a thin line between opinion and stating facts. But wondering things, since when is that not allowed?

Ginger + Liz, Ginger and Liz, lawsuit, Diamond Cosmetics, cease and desist, controversy, private label

And now what?

Is blogging as we know it indeed well and truly over? Is it asking for trouble when you're just voicing the ideas and opinions you have? Isn't this what blogging is about? An honest judgement coming from someone just like you? And what do actions like these say about a company?

The one thing I now know for sure, is that I've lost all interest in this brand. Whoops, are they going to sue me now?

- ETA: I've read some comments on another blog from Sara that could've been looked at as questionable, however, I still think the C&D is an overreaction.

Diamond Cosmetics - Tranquility

Diamond Cosmetics Tranquility

Tranquility

Tranquility. What a fitting name for this pretty little thing. This soothing blue creme by Diamond Cosmetics is a part of their 2010 Spring Collection. I love how peaceful, yet not boring, this color is!
I've read that Tranquility is a true turquoise but I don't really find that to be the case. A Robin's Egg blue is more like it. I didn't even know a color was named after the eggs of the Robin bird. Pretty cool!

While I'm normally really gung ho on more complex finishes, I really like this polish. I guess it's one of those "less is more" kinda things. Chanel somewhat declared light blues to be the next big thing for spring 2011, well, I'm ready, bring it on!

Application

Application wasn't bad, but it does need a tiny amount of thinner. I mixed in 4 drops of thinner and I was all set. Tranquility is very opaque, it's almost one coater, I needed to apply 2 coats to get it right.

Diamond Cosmetics polishes are quite cheap, depending on where you buy them. Boozyshop charges €3.95 for one bottle (12.6ml).

Boozyshop

This polish was sent to me for review by Boozy Shop. Boozy Shop is a lovely Dutch webshop, that sells a lot of great brands like Diamond Cosmetics, Essie, Sinful Colors, Milani, Wet 'n Wild and they even carry the famous 88 palettes. They ship throughout most of Europe, if you aren't sure if they ship to your country, don't hesitate to contact the owner, because she's incredibly helpful!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Diamond Cosmetics - Sparkling Sherry

Diamond Cosmetics Sparkling Sherry
Diamond Cosmetics Sparkling Sherry

Hi guys! What's up? The weather here is incredibly hot and my laptop is burning my lap as well, so I'll keep this a short post. Today I'm showing you my what was actually my first encounter with the brand Diamond Cosmetics. (I know I've posted about Monarch Masquerade earlier, but I tried this one first). As always, trying out a new brand, I was a bit afraid in terms of the quality: will it be thick or goopy or streaky. Well, this polish was none of this stuff. I kinda fell in love with it actually. And let me tell you why!

The color is really rich, a beautiful glowy and sexy deep magenta, with a really great foil finish. And, this was believe it or not a one coater. I don't come across many one coaters so I was thrilled. It went on very smoothly, I think this one might end up as one of my go to polishes when I'm in a hurry!

Diamond Cosmetics - Monarch Masquerade

Diamond Cosmetics - Monarch Masquerade

Hi guys! Things have been a little hectic lately.. As you might have noticed I've got some hosting problems, my bandwidth just keeps going to shreds. I figured something out though, but this means I'll have to edit each and every post, so a lot of pics are still inaccesible, I'm working on it!

For today I have this gorgeous purple to show you: Monarch Masquerade by Diamond Cosmetics. This was actually the first polish I've ever tried by Diamond Cosmetics and I have to say: I'm impressed. Thinking this had to be too good to be true, I tried another one, and another one, and...

...I'm still impressed. The application of this polish is pretty much perfect. I brushed on 2 coats, and it all went on smooth and evenly. No streakyness, no bubbling. And the color.. wow. This isn't just any purple, the color is so rich and full with glow and sparkle, this became one of my fave purples instantly!

Oh I almost forgot! Diamond Cosmetics nail polishes cost practically nothing! Depending on where you buy them, they'll cost around 4 euro! And the bottles contain 12.6ml, so pretty good deal for so much quality, I'd say!

Chainmail Charm

English: While I'm writing this I'm waiting for the sun to break through the coulds like it did every morning for about an hour for the past week. I love my lightbox, but I think pictures in the sun are better. Especially with holo's! And what I want to show you today is Diamond Cosmetics Chainmail Charm.

While we are waiting I'll take the opportunity to tell you about two new Dutch bloggers! We almost have enough to start a club and we could call it the Boerenkool Brigade! (Lame joke, Boerenkool is typical oldfashioned Dutch food, sort of a hotch potch with kale, mashed potatoes, smoked sausage and bacon)
Michèle and Romika, who also had a guest performance here with nail-art pics from the play date, both started a blog!
You can find Michèle here, and Romika here. Check them out because mother and daughter have beautiful nails!

English: A greyer, browner and softer version of the longtime favourite of the polish community OPI My Private Jet. I'm not crazy about MPJ, it's to harsh for me. Plus, CC scores points for being more blubbery. ;)

English: In some lights she's grey, in other light she's brown and although the holo is very present it sometimes hides a bit only to sweep you off your feet when you take a closer look.

English: This is three coats with a topcoat. Yes I said topcoat! I know some people say you shouldn't use a topcoat with holo's because it kills the effect but I've found it depends on the formula of the polish. There are holo's like the Nfu Oh holos which seem a bit dry or sandy, like someone poured flour in the polish, and those also dry semi-matte. That is the formula that doesn't play well with a topcoat and if you do use a topcoat you will lose a lot of the holo-effect. Holo's that have a smooth finish and polish like, eh, polish are hardly effected by a topcoat.

English: Yesterday was my polish day but we had company so I didn't get a chance to do that. I hope to have a new post for you tomorrow but that depends on what time we get home.

English: Thess requested more pics and less talk. lol Less talking isn't going to be possible with me so I posted more pics!
Thanks for looking!

-edit-

Tealishious!

English: I totally understand why Nfu Oh doesn't name their polishes. This polish is to cool to be bothered with silly little details like names!

Ongelooflijk perfecte donkere groen blauwe lak.

English: Incredible perfect green blue polish. When I hold it next to Misa Toxic seduction it's almost the exact same colour but on my nails there is a distinct blue undetone that the Misa lacks. I would call this a teal while Toxic Seduction is a definite green.

English: I've been trying something new the past week. I did all the swatches and photos for the whole week in one night so I could wear whatever polish I liked for the rest of the week without having to worry about my daily posts. I've worn this polish for six! days (a new record for me!) and she didn't bore me once! This also explains the wear and tear in the pic because I didn't re-apply a fresh coat of topcoat for this picture. There are only a few scratches and minimal tipwear but that's it. I'm very impressed!

I think I like this new system. As you can see my skin is a lot calmer now.

The next part is a heads-up for my Dutch readers about a Diamond Cosmetics and Essie sale Dutch webshop.

See you tomorrow!

Happy New Year!

Diamond Cosmetics Don't Teal My Heart Away.

English: I've been thinking about what I would do with my nails for New Years Eve for a couple of days. Glitter? Konad? Eventually I went with this normal, simple but very pretty polish. Diamond Cosmetics Don't Teal My Heart Away.

Diamond Cosmetics,Teal,Creme

Diamond Cosmetics,Teal,Creme

DTMHA is zo'n typische goedkope nagellak.

English: This is two coats with base- and topcoat and the pics were taken after wearing it for two days. DTMHA is one of those typical cheap polishes. At first they apply fairly well but when you get around to the second coat it starts to get thick and goopy which makes it very difficult to get an even application. Some Essence polishes have the same problem. The sollution is very simple: nail polish thinner.

Thinner can make any streaky thick and difficult polish apply like a dream! Add a good amount of drops, shake well and let it sit for a while so the air bubbles can dissapear. Please do NOT use remover to thin your polishes. Remover is designed to dissolve nail polish and it will degrade the pigments and and make your polish unusable while thinner is made from the same solvents that are used in polishes to make them liquid. With thinner you will never have to throw away another polish.

Is buying thinner to much of a hassle for you than you can find my email address under my profile on the right. ->
Please send me a message, I would love to take the polishes off your hands you were going to ruin anyway by using remover to thin them! ;)

Diamond Cosmetics,Teal,Creme

English: And no ladies, shaking your polish is not bad! In fact it's good for your polishes. As time goes by polish separates. Pigments sink to the bottom and solvents float to the top where they will evaporate even when the cap is on. By shaking your polish you will mix all these components which will make your polish last longer and keep the colour accurate so please: shake your polish! When you leave it for about ten minutes afterwards all the air bubbles caused by shaking will have disappeared.

That was a long post but it's worth it! Let it be a New Years resolution for 2010 to buy a nail polish thinner to save your polishes and to make your life a lot less complicated. I wish you a wonderful, happy, healthy and polished New Year!
